Steve Casimiro was the west coast editor of National Geographic Adventure Magazine before it went under a little less than a month ago. But hes also been busy writing for his own site, The Adventure Life. The site was started at the beginning of 2009 and has been attracting people who love all things outdoors. Well he decided to write about and interview the person behind one of my personal favorite blogs to read, Cold Splinters. Every morning, i wake up, make a bagel, pour some coffee and check what Jeff has put up on Cold Splinters. It works out quite nicely, since hes on the east coast, by the time im up here hes already posted something, unless its the weekend.

I think even Jeff was suprised by the request to be interviewed by someone like Steve from what he said earlier today on Cold Splinters. "About a month or two ago, when Steve asked if I would do an interview for The Adventure Life, I quickly accepted before he had a chance to change his mind. Was he drunk? Starting a charity? I am truly honored, and while I never take this whole blogging thing too seriously, Steve’s article makes it pretty tough to not want to keep going and going and going."

"Today I went to the Climate Justice Fast press conference at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Anna Keenan and Sara Svensson who are around my age haven’t eaten any food in 33 days. Their skin is taught around their cheek bones and their skin has a washed out pale tone which shocked me. My friends are physically taking on the challenge of climate change. With their whole bodies they push our world leaders to change.

Their energy and calm radiance was enough to fill the room with a sense of spiritual inspiration. Their words brought new perspective as to the task they have taken on. And the task over 500 others have now taken on in solidarity. Read an excerpt from Sara’s speech to get an idea.

“We ask them [our world leaders] to be courageous, to look beyond what may be politically pragmatic and instead show real bold leadership. Take scientifically sound decisions with a long term interest of the world’s population and future generation in mind. Provide real outcomes right here and now without further delay.”

The light shaped their skeletal faces in a reminder of what people all over the world are experiencing. Hunger. Hunger as a result of the changing seasons, the inability to adapt to our erratic climate, and the international policy that still isn’t strong enough for our struggling global community. Ten children die each minute from starvation, this is only getting worse as we continue to delay.

Festival in the Forest the Movie

so if you were at the amazing festival in big sur last september and you live in or around the LA area, youre going to want to come to this.
not only has cinefamily been hosting a 2 month long folk documentary festival interspersed with some awesome live music but they are going to be hosting the LA premier of the festival in the forest doc. i have been waiting a very long time for this and not only do we get to finally see it but they will be playing it right after the amazing doc. Celebration at Big Sur!!!!

a man i know next to nothing about besides that we unknowingly spent one of the more special weekends i have ever had hidden amidst the shade of the mystical redwood forest of Big Sur, Daniel Arnold, has started up a new blog to witch he is going to be posting up his photography. i came across him when after returning home from the north. a friend had posted a link to a flickr profile, witch i later found out was his, filled with pictures of that weekend. i quickly became enveloped in them and what he captured. every frame had the same feeling that i had when i was there. its very rare that i take a photograph and then later show someone and feel like ive given them a sense of what it was like there. it always comes down to the cliché quotes "you just had to be there" or "this picture doesnt do it justice." well anyways i just wanted to share with you this new page so go check it out.

The magnificent band Vetiver will be playing in Eagle Rock next Sunday the 12th & Monday the 13th at the Center for Arts. I was lucky enough to catch them last year in L.A. at the Troubadour and in Santa Cruz at the Crepe Place and even those 2 venues are completely different in atmosphere and just sounds equipment in general both shows were spectacular. They help each other overcome family tragedies and car accidents, and meet colorful characters, forgotten musical heroes, and folk luminaries as they travel across the country.

The film is an intimate portrait of life on the road for these young musicians early in their careers, playing tiny, obscure clubs and art galleries, but on the verge of larger success where small vans are replaced by large, impersonal tour buses. Here music is a creative, organic, inclusive endeavor. They not only sing about the world in which they want to live, they create it.

I also just heard about a (((Festival in the Forest))) semi-short film being made. There will be a screening of a rough cut at SXSW. Inauguration Speech-If you missed it.

The day is finally here. Bush is on his way back to where he spent much of his presidency, on his ranch and Obama has taken the presidential oath and as of 12:00 pm eastern time has become the 44th president of the United States.

Im still not sure if all this has sunk in for me yet. All i know is that im excited and anxious for the future and for once in my life i feel hopeful and confident in what seems to be the direction of our governments agenda.

Who among us is not at a loss for words? Tears pour out. Tears of joy. Tears of relief.A stunning, whopping landslide of hope in a time of deep despair.

In a nation that was founded on genocide and then built on the backs of slaves,it was an unexpected moment,shocking in its simplicity:Barack Obama, a good man, a black man, said he would bring change to Washington, and the majority of the country liked that idea. The racists were present throughout the campaign and in the voting booth.But they are no longer the majority, and we will see their flame of hate fizzle out in our lifetime.

There was another important "first" last night.Never before in our history has an avowed anti-war candidate been elected president during a time of war. I hope President-elect Obama remembers that as he considers expanding the war in Afghanistan. The faith we now have will be lost if he forgets the main issue on which he beat his fellow Dems in the primaries and then a great war hero in the general election: The people of America are tired of war. Sick and tired. And their voice was loud and clear yesterday.

It's been an inexcusable 44 years since a Democrat running for president has received even just 51% of the vote. That's because most Americans haven't really liked the Democrats. They see them as rarely having the guts to get the job done or stand up for the working people they say they support. Well, here's their chance. It has been handed to them, via the voting public, in the form of a man who is not a party hack, not a set-for-life Beltway bureaucrat. Will he now become one of them, or will he force them to be more like him? We pray for the latter.

But today we celebrate this triumph of decency over personal attack, of peace over war, of intelligence over a belief that Adam and Eve rode around on dinosaurs just 6,000 years ago. What will it be like to have a smart president? Science, banished for eight years, will return. Imagine supporting our country's greatest minds as they seek to cure illness, discover new forms of energy, and work to save the planet. I know, pinch me.

We may, just possibly, also see a time of refreshing openness, enlightenment and creativity. The arts and the artists will not be seen as the enemy. Perhaps art will be explored in order to discover the greater truths. When FDR was ushered in with his landslide in 1932, what followed was Frank Capra and Preston Sturgis, Woody Guthrie and John Steinbeck, Dorothea Lange and Orson Welles. All week long I have been inundated with media asking me, "gee, Mike, what will you do now that Bush is gone?" Are they kiddng? What will it be like to work and create in an environment that nurtures and supports film and the arts, science and invention, and the freedom to be whatever you want to be? Watch a thousand flowers bloom! We've entered a new era, and if I could sum up our collective first thought of this new era, it is this: Anything Is Possible.

An African American has been elected President of the United States! Anything is possible! We can wrestle our economy out of the hands of the reckless rich and return it to the people. Anything is possible! Every citizen can be guaranteed health care. Anything is possible! We can stop melting the polar ice caps. Anything is possible! Those who have committed war crimes will be brought to justice. Anything is possible.

We really don't have much time. There is big work to do. But this is the week for all of us to revel in this great moment. Be humble about it. Do not treat the Republicans in your life the way they have treated you the past eight years. Show them the grace and goodness that Barack Obama exuded throughout the campaign. Though called every name in the book, he refused to lower himself to the gutter and sling the mud back. Can we follow his example? I know, it will be hard.

I want to thank everyone who gave of their time and resources to make this victory happen. It's been a long road, and huge damage has been done to this great country, not to mention to many of you who have lost your jobs, gone bankrupt from medical bills, or suffered through a loved one being shipped off to Iraq. We will now work to repair this damage, and it won't be easy.

But what a way to start! Barack Hussein Obama, the 44th President of the United States. Wow. Seriously, wow.

Today we mark as a true victory for those who have strived for change and a new direction in this country. The idea of an African American President was once only a dream. To say that it is a reality after these months of anticipation feels incredibly honorable and is a true testiment to how far America has come. I feel very proud and fortunate to have been a part of such a monumental event in history.

This time of year always reminds me of the book 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' and the horrifying art in them. When i was a lot younger my older cousins would always read me these stories and scare the hell out of me.

"Come on people... there is no way you could convince me that this collection of books didn't scare the living shit out of you as a child. Pondering the days of my own self-shitting I wonder if the publishers had any idea of the impact these books would have on kids. To this day they are still printed in mass quantity and sell like hot cakes around the globe.
Many would agree that this book in particular started their fascination and addiction to the horror genre. If you look at these short stories more closely, you see they are basically mini-scripts and with the imagery of Stephen Gammell they send the stories to a frightfully personal level. Considering most of these stories have been passed down for centuries, I don't believe there would have been any other pair of men who could have collected and twisted these stories into this excellent compilation.
Some highlights include a young man withering away after peering into a mysterious man's face, a preacher who dares to spend a night in a local haunted house only to be awakened by a mysterious woman, and a woman carrying her own severed head in a wicker basket for safe keeping."

Griffith Observatory Planitarium

I highly recommend to anyone that lives in the L.A. area to go to the planitarium show at the Griffith Park Observatory. It's only 35 minutes long but it'll be the best half an hour you spend seven bucks on. The show includes an incredible 360 degree dome ceiling-screen projection of space, narrated by this guy who sounds like he could be in a movie trailer commercial. I don't think I've ever felt so small and insignificant after seeing this show because it paints the universe as such a vast and mysterious place.

So after seeing this movie, I came to a few conclusions..
1. I can't believe we elected the president we STILL have in office today.
2. Thandie Newton's portayel of Condoleezza Rice was downright scary/hilarious.
3. Republicans like to talk while chewing.

After seeing a post for an upcoming Folk Yeah Presents show that includes 3 bands that i already love, I came across an artist i have not heard before, Rodriguez. His 'Cold Fact' LP is a spectacular album and has quickly become a frequent sound coming from the speakers in my room.

Anyways, this is supposedly his first show ever in California and along with the 3 other bands playing with him (The Entrance Band, Sleepy Sun, and The Matt Baldwin Electric Band) this is a show not to be missed!

Tickets went on sale today.
